Expecting! And welcome Giovanna

Congratulations to my sister and best friend Jennifer who recently named her newborn Giovanna!

Speaking of real babies, my husband and I are expecting our first baby in early December, gender unknown. I would love to hear suggestions from readers and visitors to the blog - my mind is just static right now! When we make our final decision I'll post a list of the runners-up, both male and female. While my husband and I have loved the same three or four boy names for 5+ years, picking a girl's name has been way harder than I imagined! I am limiting myself too much (nothing that starts with a soft G or a B, nothing in the top 1000, etc) but other parts have been very fun, such as finding a middle name that honors my mother without using her exact name. Not sure why middle names are so much easier for me, but they are! As for first names, I've been drawn to very rare names with cute nicknames that also look good with our very Polish last name. In the past I've thought about names such as Lorelei, Melusina, Sabina, Saskia, Elska, Ottilie, Rumina, Zenobia, Esmerina and Aurielle, but the list is getting shorter and shorter.

So, if you're up for a bit of fun, help me find a name for an ethereal star gazer, enchanting and charming, who is wild, whimsical, magical, brave and bewitching!

UPDATE: It's a boy! But feel free to suggest names just for fun!

    I sometimes think that being a name nerd actually makes it harder to decide on a name! I'll put my thinking cap on and see if I can come up with any suggestions for you ;)

    Hi congratulations how exciting! I have been following your blog for a little while now as my husband have and I have begun discussing having children in the near future. We are the same way, lots of boys names but only one girls name and it is one of the ones you mentioned above. We however cannot decide on a middle name so I guess we part ways there! The name that comes to mind for you is Oksana.

    Hi congrats how exciting! Although not yet expecting my husband and I have been picking out names and have multiple boy names and only one girl name and you mentioned it above:) We do not have a middle name however. The name that came to mind for you is Oksana.

    Concrats on expecting your first childmay there be more! from your list i really love Esmerina i never heard of it and it sounds so melodic and loveable! i like names like Daphne, Sabria,Lucinda,Lucia,Marinda or Odette,Sybille ,Corinne.

Galician Baby Names

I grew up on a street that was named an Italian variant of Roger. When I got married and we bought our first house, it turned out to be on Roger Street. Once noting that coincidence, I started searching for other variants of the name. However, female variants turned out to be pretty nonexistent. Witchy Baby Girl Names!

Circe Invidiosa by John William Waterhouse Have a little girl due in October? Looking to name a character? Here's my [seemingly endless] list of witchy-sounding baby names. Most of them also fit in the "clunky but cool" category, or "vintage." Most plants, trees, herbs, spices, flowers, gems, space and nature names fit the bill, because in stories and current practice these things are useful to witches. I've put any actual witch names from legend, myth, literature, movies, etc in bold and up front. I have not considered the names of actual, living people or their Pagan names, and I've left out any characters that only have a surname, or truly ridiculous given names. Ancient Germanic Female Deities

Loki and Idun by John Bauer Here is a list of ancient Germanic goddess and personifications. There is some overlap with the goddesses of the Norse pantheon, and I've limited it to those names that I think would wear well today on modern babies. Of the following names, only the following were used in 2016. Sol was given to 91 girls, Ran to 5 girls, Saga to 9 girls, and Beyla to 6 girls. Beyla - as a possible agricultural personification, her name could mean "cow," "bean," or "bee," but she has been associated with bees and mead, so my guess is "bee." However, there's been a proposed connection to the reconstructed Proto-Norse name Baunila, which means "little bean." This is also a Spanish and Italian girls name.
